He may not have the vocabulary to carry on a conversation just yet, but don't be surprised if your toddler starts to mimic your telephone style with his own toy phone. You may also catch him imitating the way you act behind the wheel of the car, preparing meals, or cleaning the house. This copycat behavior can be charming or potentially embarrassing. Pay extra attention to your own language and behavior, so you don't inadvertently teach him something you'd rather not see him do.

Toddlers love to feel like they're making an important contribution to any activity, and chores around the house are no exception. You may find your child's help makes chores more fun for both of you — or you may find yourself dismayed by how long it takes to get anything done. To avoid frustration, save important tasks for times when your toddler is asleep or away. When he's around, let him help with small chores like putting his plastic cup and bowl into the sink, or tossing dirty clothes into the washing machine.
Now that your toddler can sit still for longer periods of time, reading together is more fun than ever. Asking your child to point to objects on a page is a good way to find out how much he understands, even if he can't say the words yet. And he may be able to pick out differences between similar things, like a red and a yellow balloon or a big and a small truck. Don't worry if your child doesn't say many words: A vocabulary of anywhere between ten and 50 words is normal for this stage of development.

MILESTONE- 19 months
Mastered Skills (most kids can do)
• Uses a spoon and fork
• Runs
• Throws a ball underhand
• Enjoys helping around the house
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)
• Understands as many as 200 words
• Recognizes when something is wrong (e.g., calling a dog a cat)
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
• Washes and dries own hands with help
• Points to picture or object when you call it by name
• May know when he needs to pee
At around 19 months, your toddler begins to understand when things don't conform to grownup ideas. He'll laugh at something that's obviously wrong — like calling a giraffe a zebra or calling a brother a sister. He'll also notice when something isn't quite right, like an eye missing from his stuffed bear or a new stain on the carpet.
Although you're probably still understanding less than half of what your toddler says, he's getting a handle on most of the words you use around him. He's also having a vocabulary spurt and putting together pairs of words, like "Me go" or "You put."
